Harvest is composition created from field recordings of hidden, overlooked and unusual sounds captured in and around a working tractor using a variety of recording technology and microphones. Harvest was then played to audiences from the same tractor parked in one of the fields at Wysing.

I’m very pleased to have a soundwork included as part of the Broadcasting Intimacy at UWE Fine Art Studios curated and produced by Deirdre Canavan at Spike Island, Bristol throughout this weekend. Broadcasting Intimacy aims to explore our relationship to sound, our ability to communicate from the margins, and the mediums by which we navigate this. A discussion and collective listening event will also take place in the exhibition space on Saturday 29 April 1 – 2PM, with sound artist Alice Boyd and audio producer Eliza Lomas.

My soundwork Sybillam, created for this project, was created by harvesting and processing the invisible interference, radiation and electromagnetic frequencies picked up by a receiver in a field outside my studio.

Selected works, including Sybillam will also will also be broadcast on Noods Radio on Saturday 29th April between 4 and 5pm.

Next weekend (September 25th - 26th) is the 2021 edition of The Dark Outside at Murrays Monument in the Galloway Forest - the UK’s first Dark Sky Park. The Dark Outside is a very special annual FM radio broadcast that can only be heard on site with a radio and all files are deleted after being played. Some recent sound works I’ve been working on part of a recent arts council funding award are included in this year’s event. More info here.

It’s time for this year’s Open Studios at Wysing Arts Centre from midday to 5.30pm on Saturday 7th August. Accolade is a participatory artwork reflecting on the complex forces at play in the drive for success. The installation contains masses of slumped ceramic trophies which, like a procession of susceptible egos, struggle to keep their balance in a questionable glory parade.

All trophies are available for sale and a selection of them contain up to a thousand pounds worth of gold bullion within the fired clay. It’s impossible to know in advance which trophies contain the gold and the only way to be truly sure would be to smash the purchased artwork.

The price of each trophy is as variable as the individual purchasing it. I collaborated with the statistician and author of The Art of Statistics Professor David Spiegelhalter to develop a questionnaire and algorithm which calculates a personally adjusted price depending on an individual’s circumstances and chances of societal success. The aim of the algorithm is a playful contemplation of a fairer world of art pricing.

The British Ceramics Biennial 2019 is on at the old Spode Factory in Stoke-on-Trent from 7th September to 13th October 2019.

I have recently returned from a remarkable couple of months on a residency at Jingdezhen International Studio in China. Known as ‘porcelain city’ Jingdezhen has an incredible history as a centre for ceramics. The local community have been using their amazing local clays for well over 1700 years and it continues to be a place where pretty much every ceramic object you can think of (and plenty you’d never contemplated!) get made.

I was lucky enough to spend much of my time working with some highly skilled local master craftsmen and women at a time of dramatic development and change across the city.

The residency was organised by the European Ceramic Work Centre (Sundaymorning@ekwc) in the Netherlands and Jingdezhen International Studio. Some of the work developed during the residency can now be seen in the exhibition A Taste of Ceramics at the Taoxichuan Art Gallery before touring. Other artists in the exhibition include Liu JIanhua, Jin Wenwe, Geng Xue, Lena Kaapke, Jessica Harrison and Koen Taselaar.

Update: this show has now been extended until the end of August.

In similar news another selection of my coins from AGAIN together with both editions of the accompanying artist’s book ‘the very last time’ (edited by Lawrence Epps and Holly Corfield Carr) will be shortly making their way into the Crafts Council Collection. This is particularly exciting as I have strong memories of visiting their exhibition space on Pentonville Road (which has since closed) as a child on family days out to London.

So I’m delighted to be helping Wysing Arts Centre bring it back to life as part of the Making Everyday project in association with Grizedale Arts who are bringing their philosophy that art and artists can affect change and benefit wide culture from Coniston to Cambridge. Take Stock is made up of 4,000 extruded blocks and during the course of the show visitors to the Museum Jorn will be invited to take a unit of the sculpture away with the them. These interactions with the ever decreasing sculpture will be captured on camera. Once the last block is gone, the sculpture will be replaced by a projection of the disappearing work, played in reverse.
